There are some situations you’ll want to watch for if you are looking at mobile home communities.  Mobile homes can be more expensive than traditional homes if you have to pay a high lot rent on top of the cost of buying the mobile home.  Additionally, if you do not choose your mobile home community with care, you may find that you will have to pay to have maintenance done on the property where your mobile home sits.  You will also want to have someone look at the condition of the mobile home you choose.  Many mobile homes have a poor resale value.  Though they are made with high quality materials, they are not made with the same quality as a traditional home, and sometimes there are problems with the doors and other parts of the home that are made with lighter weight materials to allow the mobile homes to be truly mobile.  If they were to use the same heavy, high-quality materials as in a traditional home, the mobile home would almost be too heavy for a single truck to pull.

When you choose a mobile home community, you want to be sure that the mobile homes are well cared for, whether or not they are occupied.  When you see how the homes are cared for, you get an idea of how your lot fees and other extra expenses are spent.  If the owners of the mobile home community are more interested in making money than taking care of the seniors in their mobile home communities, there will be many cases where you will not be well taken care of.

Though you might think that the drawbacks and things to watch for mobile home communities would be a good reason to find another type of retirement community, there are many perks to living in a mobile home retirement community, other than simply having your own home and having like minded seniors living around you.

You may want to have your grandkids visit occasionally.  In an over 55 mobile home community, your grandkids can play in your own little yard.  You can look out the window or sit on your own porch and watch the kids play, so you don’t have to worry about anything happening to them.  Additionally, because you will know all your neighbors, you know that your neighbors wouldn’t think twice about making sure the kids were okay if you had to go inside for a moment to answer the telephone. 

Over 55 mobile home communities have other bonuses that haven’t yet been listed.  Like other retirement communities, mobile home communities are small communities where you can know everyone else that lives near you.  These people will have similar interests, and they will be able to watch out for you, as you can watch out for them.  Though you won’t want to put yourself in danger, if you see something suspicious, you can call the police easily.  If you haven’t seen your neighbor in a couple of days, and they haven’t told you they will be out of town, then you can check on them or have someone else check on them.  You can be sure that your neighbors would do the same for you.

Though many apartments have their own washer and dryer, others may not have the room for a washer and dryer.  Mobile homes are built so you can have a washer and dryer in your own home.  You don’t need to worry that you’d have to go somewhere else like a Laundromat or central laundry room to do your laundry.  Though this may seem trivial at first, having your own washer and dryer can save you time and effort when you reach the point where you cannot carry a lot of laundry at one time.
